charging nonresidents could fully support the system while giving Floridians financial relief

TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis floated the idea of eliminating tolls for Florida residents during a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, proposing that the lost revenue could be offset by charging out-of-state visitors instead.
DeSantis noted that toll roads have long been a part of life in Florida, saying they have existed for as long as he can remember. He said removing tolls would ease the financial burden on residents who often encounter multiple tolls during their daily commutes and longer trips, costs that can add up significantly over time.
The governor suggested that visitors could help shoulder the expense, arguing that charging nonresidents could fully support the system while giving Floridians financial relief.

Ben Watkins, Florida’s Director of Bond Finance, responded to the proposal by saying the idea would be reviewed. DeSantis pushed back, emphasizing the need for determination to make the concept work, stating that with enough will, a path forward could be found to implement the change.
