Trooper Airlifted to Hospital After PIT Maneuver Crash in Brevard

The Florida Highway Patrol reported that a trooper was injured Christmas morning after a pursuit of a reckless driver on Interstate 95 in Brevard County ended in a violent crash, authorities said.

BREVARD COUNTY • TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA – A Florida Highway Patrol trooper was injured Christmas morning after a pursuit of a reckless driver on Interstate 95 in Brevard County ended in a violent crash, authorities said.

The incident unfolded around 9:23 a.m. near mile marker 221 in the southbound lanes of I-95 in the Titusville area.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, troopers initially observed a 2020 Mercedes-Benz being driven recklessly and attempted to stop the vehicle.

During the pursuit, a trooper performed a Precision Immobilization Technique, or PIT maneuver, to bring the fleeing vehicle to a halt. The maneuver caused both the Mercedes and the patrol vehicle to leave the roadway, where they struck a guardrail and came to rest off the highway.

The trooper sustained injuries described as non-life-threatening and was airlifted to a nearby hospital for further treatment, FHP officials said.

The driver of the Mercedes was taken into custody at the scene. A passenger in the vehicle was also arrested after troopers discovered an active warrant out of Broward County, authorities said.

Florida Highway Patrol investigators remained on scene for several hours as they examined the two-vehicle crash. Lt. Tara Crescenzi, an FHP spokesperson, said charges against the driver are pending as the investigation continues.

Traffic in the area was affected while troopers worked the scene, but lanes were later reopened. The names of those involved have not been released.
