BREVARD COUNTY • TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA — New details have emerged in the mysterious death of 18-year-old Anna Kepner, the Titusville teen found dead aboard the Carnival Horizon earlier this month.

A source familiar with the investigation says Kepner died from asphyxiation caused by a “bar hold,” an arm pressed across the neck, raising new questions as federal authorities continue to investigate what happened during the family vacation.

Kepner, a straight-A student and cheerleader from Titusville, was traveling with her father, stepmother, and step-siblings when she was reported missing on Nov. 8.

Hours later, security personnel discovered her body under a bed in a stateroom, wrapped in a blanket and concealed beneath several life vests, according to a security source briefed on the case. Investigators also noted two bruises on the side of her neck.

The FBI, which has jurisdiction over major crimes aboard U.S.-based cruise ships, has declined to comment publicly, citing the active nature of the investigation. The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office also refused to release further information.

Autopsy and toxicology results are still pending.

How can we possibly capture every bit of beauty that was Anna Marie Kepner? Our Anna Banana, our sunshine, our babygirl? At just 18 years old, she filled the world with laughter, love, and light that reached everyone around her. A Celebration of Anna’s Life was held on November 20 at The Grove Church in Titusville. According to preliminary findings shared with investigators, there was no indication of sexual assault and no apparent presence of drugs or alcohol in Kepner’s system. Those details, however, remain unconfirmed until final reports are completed.

Kepner’s family described her as a “happy, bubbly” young woman with a promising future, remembering her as a hardworking student and dedicated athlete. Her death has stunned friends and loved ones in the tight-knit Titusville community.

Documents from a separate family court proceeding add another layer to the case.

In a filing requesting a delay in a custody hearing, Kepner’s stepmother, Shauntel Hudson, noted that one of her minor children may face criminal charges related to the teen’s death. The filing states the FBI is conducting an investigation “arising out of the sudden death of 18-year-old Anna Kepner.”

Authorities have not announced any suspects or charges. However, a source previously told investigators that a teenage stepsibling was under scrutiny.
