BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA — One person was killed in a head-on crash Tuesday evening on Sykes Creek Parkway near Old Audubon Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the fatal collision occurred at approximately 5:31 p.m. as two vehicles were approaching each other on a curved stretch of Sykes Creek Parkway.

Preliminary information indicates a 2003 Toyota 4Runner was traveling northbound toward Old Audubon Road when, for reasons still under investigation, the driver failed to negotiate the curve in the roadway.

The SUV crossed the center line and entered the southbound lane, directly into the path of an oncoming 2025 GMC Sierra pickup truck.

The front of the Toyota struck the front of the GMC, resulting in a violent head-on impact.

The driver of the Toyota 4Runner, described as an adult male whose identity has not yet been confirmed, suffered critical injuries. He was transported to Cape Canaveral Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The driver of the GMC Sierra, a 30-year-old man from Merritt Island, was not injured and remained at the scene, troopers said. No additional injuries were reported.

Following the crash, Sykes Creek Parkway was closed in both directions near Old Audubon Road as troopers conducted their investigation and crews cleared the scene. Motorists were urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.

Authorities have not indicated whether speed, impairment, or other factors contributed to the crash. The incident remains under active investigation, and a media release with additional details is expected once more information becomes available.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has relevant information is encouraged to contact the Florida Highway Patrol.
