BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA BEACH, FLORIDA — A Cape Canaveral man is facing dozens of felony charges after Cocoa Beach Police concluded a months-long investigation into an alleged elder fraud scheme that resulted in tens of thousands of dollars in losses.

The Cocoa Beach Police Department announced that on December 17, officers arrested Elias Staker, 49, of Cape Canaveral, following an extensive investigation into the theft and fraudulent use of checks belonging to an elderly victim.

According to police, investigators determined that Staker allegedly wrote and cashed numerous stolen checks over several months, causing financial losses totaling more than $33,000.

Detectives say the pattern of activity pointed to an ongoing scheme rather than an isolated incident.

As a result of the investigation, Staker has been charged with 38 counts of Uttering Forged Checks, each a third-degree felony, and one count of Scheme to Defraud, a second-degree felony.

Following his arrest, Staker was transported to the Brevard County Jail, where authorities say he is currently being held without bond.

Authorities continue to remind residents—particularly seniors and their caregivers—to remain vigilant about financial activity and to report any suspected fraud to law enforcement promptly.

Police emphasized that the investigation remains active and additional information or charges may follow. Anyone with information related to this case is urged to contact Detective Jessica Clanton of the Cocoa Beach Police Department at 321-868-3285.
