BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Space Coast-based United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) is mourning the loss of former Board Member and longtime leader Thomas “Tom” Turley, who passed away on December 17 at the Olathe Hospice House in Kansas, surrounded by his loving family. He was 82.

A resident of Overland Park, Kansas, Tom Turley played a pivotal yet often understated role in the growth and evolution of USSSA, particularly in Kansas and throughout the Midwest.

Widely regarded as an unsung hero of the organization’s early expansion, Tom’s vision, dedication, and steady leadership helped shape USSSA into the multi-sport powerhouse it is today.

During a transformative period when USSSA expanded beyond its original scope, Tom was named Vice President of Director Development.

In that role, he was instrumental in establishing and strengthening several programs, including fastpitch softball, basketball, and martial arts.

He also facilitated the landmark meeting at the Mid-America complex that ultimately led to the creation of USSSA Baseball—one of the organization’s most prominent and enduring programs.

Tom Turley’s influence continues to be felt across the organization—from grassroots programs in the Midwest to nationally recognized venues such as USSSA Space Coast Stadium in Brevard County, home to USSSA’s national headquarters and a premier destination for youth and amateur sports.

Turley’s commitment to excellence did not go unnoticed.

Over the years, he earned numerous national honors, including the USSSA Distinguished Service Award in 2000, the President’s Award in 2004, and the prestigious E. A. Ramsey/CEO Commitment to Excellence Award in 2008.

In recognition of his lasting impact, Turley was inducted into the USSSA Hall of Fame in the Executive Category in 2005.

That same year, he began his service on the USSSA Board of Directors, where he remained an invaluable and respected member until his retirement in 2014.

His influence continues to be felt across the organization—from grassroots programs in the Midwest to nationally recognized venues such as USSSA Space Coast Stadium in Brevard County, home to USSSA’s national headquarters and a premier destination for youth and amateur sports.

“Space Coast Stadium stands as a testament to the nationwide reach and legacy of the organization Tom helped build,” said a USSSA spokesperson.

“Tom Turley’s passion for sports, service-oriented leadership, and unwavering belief in providing opportunities for athletes of all ages left an indelible mark on USSSA and the countless lives touched through its programs. He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever honored for his enduring contributions.”
