BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Brevard Schools Foundation, in partnership with Brevard Public Schools, proudly announced Michelle Hanus, an ESOL teacher at Melbourne High School, as the 2025-2026 Brevard Public Schools Teacher of the Year during the annual ABC (Applauding Brevard’s Champions) Awards Teacher of the Year Gala, held Tuesday evening at the Radisson Resort at the Port in Cape Canaveral.
The Teacher of the Year program recognizes outstanding educations who demonstrate excellence in instruction, leadership, and service to students.
Hanus was selected from a distinguished group of finalists representing schools across the district.
“Being named alongside such remarkable educators is an honor in itself,” said Hanus.
“Every day, teachers across Brevard County demonstrate excellence, dedication, and a deep commitment to their students. Teaching is about helping students build confidence, develop strong skills, and realize what they are capable of achieving. I am honored to represent Brevard Public Schools and grateful for the opportunity to serve students and support their success in and beyond the classroom.”
“Teaching is never a solo effort. I am continually guided, challenged, and inspired by my colleagues, whose collaboration and belief in students push us all to be better.”
As Brevard’s Teacher of the Year, she will represent the district at the state level as part of the Florida Department of Education’s Teacher of the Year program.
“Educators like Michelle Hanus are champions who make a lasting difference in the lives of students,” said Janice Kershaw, President and CEO of Brevard Schools Foundation.
“Through dedication, high expectations, and a commitment to helping every learner succeed, she represents the very best of public education in Brevard County. We are proud to celebrate her leadership and impact.”

Hanus is known for her commitment to student growth, instructional excellence, and fostering confidence in learners.
Her work supports students in developing the skills they need to succeed academically and beyond the classroom.
Dr. Mark Rendell, Superintendent of Brevard Public Schools, praised the district’s educators and the impact they have on students every day.
“The teachers we honor today strengthen the heart of Brevard Public Schools. Their commitment to supporting students, uplifting colleagues, and fostering safe, welcoming campuses is remarkable. They demonstrate that caring adults make all the difference in a child’s educational experience, and we are incredibly thankful for the positive influence they bring to our district.”

Hanus was named the 2025–2026 Brevard Public Schools Teacher of the Year in recognition of her dedication to student success, instructional excellence, and commitment to supporting learners as they build confidence and academic skills.
An English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) teacher at Melbourne High School, Hanus works closely with students to help them strengthen language proficiency, access rigorous coursework, and achieve academic success. Her approach emphasizes high expectations, relationship-building, and practical strategies that help students thrive in the classroom and beyond.
Hanus believes teaching is about helping students recognize their potential and develop the skills needed to reach their goals. Through consistent support and purposeful instruction, she creates an environment where students are encouraged to grow, take ownership of their learning, and persevere through challenges.
Her work reflects a strong commitment to public education and to ensuring students feel supported, prepared, and confident as they move forward in their academic journeys.
The ABC Awards Teacher of the Year Gala is part of Brevard Schools Foundation’s annual Applauding Brevard’s Champions Awards program, which celebrates excellence among teachers, administrators, support professionals, and volunteers across the district.
