Melbourne Police Investigating Fatal Crash
BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA — Melbourne police are investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a Palm Bay woman Saturday afternoon at a busy city intersection.
According to the Melbourne Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 2:12 p.m. on Dec. 20 to a reported crash at the intersection of Strawbridge Avenue and Pine Street.
The preliminary investigation determined that a gray 2021 Dodge Charger was traveling westbound on Strawbridge Avenue at a high rate of speed when it left the roadway.
The vehicle struck a concrete pole and then a metal chain-link fence before coming to rest on the north side of the roadway near a retention pond.
Officers arriving on scene located the driver inside the vehicle and determined the individual was deceased. The driver has been identified as Christa M. Ryder, 37, of Palm Bay.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash, police said.
The Melbourne Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit is handling the investigation, which remains active. Authorities have not released additional details regarding the circumstances leading up to the crash.
