WASHINGTON D.C. – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday dismissed claims that Kyiv attempted to attack Russian President Vladimir Putin’s residence, describing the allegation as a “complete fabrication” and part of a broader effort by Moscow to justify intensified strikes on Ukraine.

The dispute followed comments from Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who said Ukraine had tried to target Putin’s home in Novgorod in northern Russia and warned that Moscow would respond. Reuters first reported Lavrov’s remarks.

Zelenskyy addressed the accusation in a post on X, saying the narrative was designed to legitimize further Russian attacks, including on the capital. He argued that Russia has repeatedly struck Kyiv before, including government facilities, and accused Moscow of avoiding meaningful steps toward ending the war.

“This alleged ‘residence strike’ story is a complete fabrication intended to justify additional attacks against Ukraine, including Kyiv, as well as Russia’s own refusal to take necessary steps to end the war,” Zelenskyy wrote, adding, “Typical Russian lies.”
