WASHINGTON D.C. – The Senate has confirmed former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) CEO Linda McMahon as President Donald Trump’s Secretary of Education, a role in which she will oversee a department he has vowed to dismantle.
In a vote held Monday evening, the Senate approved McMahon’s nomination with a 51-45 vote along party lines.
McMahon, who co-founded WWE alongside her husband, Vince McMahon, previously served as the administrator of the Small Business Administration (SBA) during Trump’s first term. She stepped down from that position in 2019 to return to the private sector.
In November, Trump selected her for another high-ranking role in his administration—this time, with the expectation that she would eliminate the very department she was set to lead.
“It’s a big con job,” Trump said of the Education Department. “They ranked the top countries in the world. We’re ranked No. 40, but we’re ranked No. 1 in one department: cost per pupil. So, we spend more per pupil than any other country in the world, but we’re ranked No. 40.”
In a letter to Democratic members of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP), McMahon expressed her full support for Trump’s plan to dismantle the department, stating that she “wholeheartedly” agreed with the president’s vision.
