BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — A 33-year-old Port St. Lucie man was killed and a 27-year-old North Carolina woman was critically injured early Saturday in a series of three connected crashes on I-95 south of State Road 46, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the first collision happened around 12:08 a.m. at mile marker 223 when the driver of a 2019 Chevy Impala, traveling north in the center lane, attempted to change into the outside lane and moved directly into the path of a 2024 Volkswagen.

The Impala’s front right side hit the Volkswagen’s rear left, sending the SUV into a ditch along the right shoulder.

The Impala veered left, struck the concrete median, and became disabled in the inside northbound lane. The driver exited his vehicle and stood nearby, investigators said.

Moments later, a 2025 Hyundai Elantra and a 2019 Audi A4 approached the disabled Impala in the inside lane.

The Hyundai’s driver attempted to swerve left but still collided with the Impala, then struck the Impala’s driver, throwing him into the roadway. The Audi, traveling behind the Hyundai, also swerved but was unable to avoid hitting the man.

A Good Samaritan stopped to assist the victim, FHP said.

A third crash then occurred when a 2010 Nissan Murano in the center lane attempted to avoid the Good Samaritan, who was in the roadway. Troopers say both the Murano’s driver and the pedestrian tried to avoid one another, but the SUV still struck her.

The Impala’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The Volkswagen driver, a 45-year-old man from Weston, was taken to Parrish Medical Center with minor injuries.

The Audi driver, 23, of Cocoa, the Hyundai driver, 51, of Ponte Vedra, and the Murano’s driver and passenger, ages 30 and 28, from Coronado, CA, and New Smyrna Beach, were not injured and remained at the scene.

The Good Samaritan was airlifted to HCA Lake Monroe Hospital in critical but stable condition.

According to a report by the Schiller Kessler Group, I-95 in Florida is one of the most dangerous highways in the country, with a section between Eau Gallie Boulevard and Wickham Road in Brevard being identified among the most hazardous stretches.

Troopers frequently cite driver negligence, improper lane changes, speeding, and construction zones as major contributors to dangerous conditions.

Saturday’s events follow a troubling trend of serious crashes involving people who exit their vehicles and Good Samaritans who stop to help—both of whom are at significant risk on this corridor.

The Florida Highway Patrol urges drivers to take extra precautions along I-95 by staying alert and aware of rapidly changing traffic conditions, trying to avoid peak travel hours when possible, obeying all traffic laws, including posted speeds and safe lane-change practices.

If involved in a crash, move to a safe location if possible and use extreme caution before exiting your vehicle.

The Florida Highway Patrol says the investigation into Saturday’s crashes remains ongoing.
