(FOX NEWS) – The U.S. military launched what officials described as a large-scale strike in Venezuela early Saturday, resulting in the detention of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, President Donald Trump said.

In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump said the operation was successful and that the couple had been taken into custody and flown out of the country.

He added that the mission was carried out in coordination with U.S. law enforcement agencies and announced plans for a news conference at Mar-a-Lago at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Residents in Caracas reported hearing at least seven explosions in the capital during the early morning hours, according to The Associated Press. Low-flying aircraft were also seen over the city at around 2 a.m. local time.

Military sources said the helicopters involved belonged to the U.S. Army’s 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, commonly known as the “Night Stalkers.”

The Venezuelan government said in a statement that “the civilian and military localities of the city of Caracas, capital of the Republic, and the states of Miranda, Aragua and La Guaira” were impacted by the attack.
