BREVARD COUNTY SHERIFF WAYNE IVEY: ‘good stuff is happening all over brevard’

ABOVE VIDEO: The Brevard County Sheriff’s Department has released a new video series highlighting heartwarming stories of the good things that happen on the Space Coast.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Hello, everyone, I’m Sheriff Wayne Ivey, and this, this right here, this is the good stuff.

Like most of you, I never watch or read the news anymore because, let’s be honest, all they do is push their own agenda and try to sell you doom and gloom without ever telling you all the positive stuff that goes on in our world.

So with that said, we created the good stuff to highlight all the amazing work that our team members and community do to make Brevard County one of the most awesome places on earth to call home.

You know, good stuff like what happened this past Thursday night when deputies from our East Precinct responded to a report of a 62-year-old man who suffers from dementia and had not been seen by his wife since early afternoon.

When deputies arrived on scene, it was determined that the 62-year-old male, who had previously been diagnosed with dementia, had left the family’s residence earlier in the day to run a brief errand in his 2009 Toyota pickup truck, which, by the way, he’s no longer supposed to drive because of his condition.

When he did not return later in the evening, she became extremely worried after not being able to reach him on his cell phone, and even more concerning, knowing that he has great difficulty driving at night.

Agent Carson Hendron received multiple pings on his cell phone around 2 a.m. Deputy Joseph Schultz of the Canaveral precinct traveled to the pond near the west end of George King Boulevard, and Deputy Hunter Bias assisted.

After repeated attempts to reach him on his cell phone, our deputies went to work using various investigative resources in an effort to locate him and return him home safely.

As the investigation unfolded, deputies determined that the 62-year-old had traveled as far south as Vero Beach and then back north to Brevard County, where he was last known to be in the area of 528 near Port Canaveral.

After searching the area of SR 528 where he was last seen, Agent Carson Hendron received multiple pings on his cell phone around two o’clock in the morning, indicating he was in the immediate area of SR 528 and George King Boulevard.

Armed with the latest information, Deputy Joseph Schultz of our Canaveral precinct traveled to the pond near the west end of George King Boulevard, where he immediately observed a person in the middle of the water.

After getting no response from the person in the water, Deputy Schultz secured his gun belt in his vehicle and then, as you can see on the video, swam out to the person and subsequently pulled him to safety with the assistance of Deputy Hunter Bias.

Thanks to the quick actions of Agent Hendron, Deputy Schultz, and Deputy Bias, the victim was rescued and transported by our great partners at Brevard County Fire Rescue to Cape Canaveral Hospital, where he was evaluated and ultimately reunited with his family.

The victim’s car was found fully submerged in the pond, and there’s no question that without the quick actions of our team members, the man would have been unable to make it safely to shore.

You know, folks, I tell people every day that I’m surrounded by a fantastic team of men and women who knock it out of the park every day to keep our community safe, and this incident is a perfect example of just how true that statement really is.

As Sheriff, I cannot be more proud of our team for their incredible effort yesterday to save this individual, who by the way, is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and a veteran of the United States Navy.

Man, I love Brevard County, because this, this right here, this is the good stuff. ♪ That’s the good stuff ♪ ♪ That’s the good stuff!
